I'm sorry, but I refuse to accept that a trainspotter could possibly
be scary.
Except possibly in the "Oh, my God, he's so sad he's frightening"
sense.

Except for those idiots who clamber around the tracks to get closer to
the trains at the depot...

They're not scary; they're just stupid...

But when he's on Pop Idol (or whatever they call it nowadays), he's not
in trainspotting mode, he's in 'Let's see if I can be an even bigger
git than Simon Cowell' mode.
I remember reading the Guardian TV Guide write-up for Pop Idol a while
ago, and it described Pete Waterman as 'getting proper Birmingham
angry' with some of the contestants. Sums it up well!

He's still a trainspotter, has been for significantly more years than
he's been a pop impresario of any type, is known to dribble over large
metal boxes [1] and equally large kettles [2], and that rather spoils
the effect for me. I know he's only pretending.

What, he grabbed them by the throat, put them through the nearest
(closed) window and followed them through - screaming extremely
difficult to understand (because of the accent) abuse as he went - to
continue the assault?
That's proper Birmingham angry, or it was when I was a kid in the sort
of area proper Birmingham angry could be seen.
I suspect the Guardian correspondent meant Birmingham-pretending-to-
-be-annoyed... ;-)
[1] Diesel locomotives. [3]
[2] Steam locomotives. [3]
[3] Trainspotters are known to have gotten *very* upset when their
preferred variety of train is described dismissively as either a box
or a kettle. This is because they have no sense of humour whatsoever
where trains are concerned.

Well, obviously. That's almost like making fun of pins.

Make fun of pins?
You, sir, are a bounder and a cad for even suggesting such a
possibility and I demand satisfaction. Or a pin, perhaps.
